According to the Vermont State Police, Steven Bessette Jr., 33, was driving erratically sometime around midday on Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle heading Southbound on I-89 and crashed. A concerned motorist who witnessed the crash stopped to offer assistance, but was confronted by an intoxicated Bessette who punched the good Samaritan in the face.
The police report from the incident states that the concerned motorist then returned a blow, knocking Bessette unconscious. Bessette was then taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries before being taken into custody by police. He now awaits trial for a variety of charges including a second offense for driving under the influence, careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Bessette is also known to police for a history of offenses including a 2018 ambush robbery when Bessette and an accomplice pretended to be having car trouble and robbed a Richford couple who stopped to help of cash, car keys and a cell phone at rifle point.
